RescueNET - Inmarsat

Finalist of the Innovation & Technology: For Innovation and Technology in Maritime SAR Award

RescueNET has been developed by Inmarsat. It's a completely new, unique, secure web-based safety service that is offered to Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs) free of charge to support global Search and Rescue operations. RescueNET is designed to reduce response times, improve search and rescue (SAR) communications between multiple vessels and any MRCCs involved in a rescue mission.

The service provides a multitude of capabilities such as reception of Distress Alerts, Distress Chat, ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship priority messaging, nearby vessel search, broadcast of Distress Alert Relay (via SafetyNET II) and access to Inmarsat vessel databases.

RescueNET provides interoperability between current Inmarsat GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress Safety System) approved systems, Inmarsat C and Mini C, and Fleet Safety. It’s available worldwide and already being used by more than 20 countries.

According to Vladimirs Sadoha, Latvian Coast Guard, MRCC Riga: “The new Inmarsat RescueNET system is a great step forward in Maritime SAR; it will enhance cross-border co-ordination of SAR operations. One of the most important things is that Inmarsat has brought maritime units into the ‘RCCs Chat’, which will enhance communication between adjacent RCCs, the casualty and vessels in the vicinity of a maritime incident.

The United States Coast Guard has confirmed that its Rescue and Coordination Center in Norfolk has installed RescueNET as an additional SAR resource using the chat room feature, allowing rescue personnel from various RCCs to relay written communications between SAR entities.

Conventional SAR systems can be very costly to install and maintain, which can limit the capabilities of poorer countries to provide lifesaving services, but RescueNET does not require any specialized equipment and is free to SAR authorities around the world.
